Storytime: Music and Dance

on November 14, 2013

Last night at Evening Family Storytime, we jammed and grooved because the theme was Music and Dance. It was a really fun storytime! As always, the songs I used to begin and end are over at my Hello and Goodbye page.

Fingerplay: “Dance Your Fingers Up”

Dance your fingers up, dance your fingers down
Dance your fingers to the side, dance them all around
Dance them on your shoulders, dance them on your head
Dance them on your tummy, and put them all to bed

Action Rhyme: “We Can Jump”

We can jump, jump, jump
We can hop, hop, hop
We can clap, clap, clap
We can stomp, stomp, stomp
We can nod our heads for yes
We can shake our heads for no
We can bend our knees a little bit
And we can sit down really slow

Book: Dancing Feet! By Lindsey Craig

I adore this book! The kids really enjoyed guessing which animal was next based on the feet.

Song: “Silly Dance Contest” –Jim Gill (The Sneezing Song)

Dance any way you want to
Dance any way you please
Dance any way you want to
Bur stop when I say freeze.

Jump as high as you want to…
Dance as fast as you want to…
Dance as slow as you want to…

Book: Jazzmatazz by Stephanie Calmenson

Activity: Making Muisc

I let each child choose an instrument from our assortment of maracas, tambourines, triangles, etc. Then together we did different things with them such as play them high, low, to the side, with our eyes closed, behind our backs, really quiet to really loud…

Book: Boom Bah! By Phil Cummings

This is a cute book, but honestly I would have been better off not using it. By this point most of the attention spans were over.

Song: “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes”

Head shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes
Head shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes
Eyes and ears and mouth and nose
Head shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes

And then we repeated it going faster and faster and faster… it was definitely my workout for the day!
